Alan Thilak ShitoRyu Karate School was founded by the late Dai Sensei Moses Thilak. The school has been in existence for more than 45 years. It is a non-political organization, recognised by various State Associations, National Federations, and International Bodies.
Starting with its headquarters in Chennai, India, students of Dai Sensei Moses Thilak have spread throughout the length and breadth of India — from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, and from Baroda, Gujarat to Imphal, Manipur. The school members were instrumental in the formation of State Associations across the country and developed the National Federation — All India Karate Do Federation. The school further spread to the Middle East, South East Asia, Europe, UK, USA and Canada, earning the name "Alan Thilak Karate School International."
The school has been conducting regular seminars and coaching camps to maintain its high standards. The vast knowledge of our founder Dai Sensei Dr. Moses Thilak helped the school become one of the best in the world. Special camps by eminent international teachers are a regular practice. The school has hosted Dai Sensei Late Kenni Mabuni, Soke of Shito Ryu Style from Japan (in 1986, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1999), Sensei Tommy Morris — Kancho Kobe Osaka International and Chief Referee of World Karate Federation from Scotland (in 2001, 2010), Sensei John Rawlings, Vice President Australian Karate Federation (in 2000), Sensei Kato of Japan (in 1995), Sensei Hunter Armstrong — Director, International Hopopology Society of USA and Coach of Unarmed Combat for US Marines (in 2003), and Sensei Antonio Oliva Seba — the legendary 10th-degree black belt and pioneer of sports karate coaching, among others.
The students and instructors of Alan Thilak ShitoRyu Karate School have brought pride and honour by winning medals at National and International championships. Various State and National Championships were dominated by Alan Thilak students year after year — including the prestigious National Open Kumite Champion and National Kata Champion categories. At the 8th SAF Games in Nepal in 1999, students won multiple medals for Karate. The school was presented with a medal for best participation in the KOI 13th World Cup in Manila (2004) and KOI 14th World Cup in Bulgaria (2007).
The instructors of the school hold Asian Karate Federation and World Karate Federation Referee and Coaches Licences and are top-ranked Referees and Judges in India. Since Alan Thilak Karate School teaches modern sports Karate (non-contact with safety equipment), none of the children get injured during training or competition. A few of our champions have been absorbed into Medical, Engineering Colleges and Police Academies.
The school follows the Thilak-ha Shito-Ryu style — a blend of both Shorei and Shorin traditions, making it highly effective for self-defence and competition. We also impart coaching in GojuRyu, Shotokan, WadoRyu, and ShorinRyu for interested students.
The school is currently headed by Soshihan Neil Moses Thilak, son of Dai Sensei Moses Thilak, as Chief Technical Director. He started his karate journey at the age of 6, was awarded his black belt at 13 (in 1991), and has served as Karate Coach to the Indian Team at WKF World Championships many times.
